Model vs. Final Product

A side-by-side comparison between the model, built and provided by scenic designer Bruce Bergner, and the set that I technically designed and was built by the production assistants at the University of Colorado Boulder Scene Shop.

Building the Set

Due to the semester’s timeline, construction started just a month before opening night. First, all of the studwalls were built, starting by building the first stud wall and then creating a jig so that every studwall would be exactly the correct angle, as the main platform is on a 3/4” rake. Then, platforms were pulled from stock and custom platforms were built, which were then loaded onto the stud walls to create the base for the deck. Then, homasote (for sound dampening) and masonite were added, alongside stock escape stairs and custom built stairs for the front edge of the rake.

After the deck was built, the focus moved toward the eight columns, each with a skeleton made of 2x4s and a counterraked platform so they could sit level, and which were then faced with 3/8” bendy board and corrugated roofing material. Once the columns were installed, the majourity of the build was in place, and the shop could shift focus to the 8 sittables, 2 tables, window unit, and bed, which were all also custom built for the show.
